Bangkok, Thailand : Abandoned Skyscraper - Sathorn Unique Aint Worth Shit Yo

Abandoned skyscraper, Bangkok, Thailand. Fifty levels, of abandonded skyscraper. Wood flooring installed, bathroom suites connected, wiring, plumbing, fire safety systems, all done. Prime realestate on the river-bank downtown, with spectacular views. The "Sathorn Unique" was to be one of Bangkok's most exclusive residential developments. Like many other sites, constuction was abandoned during the asian financial crisis of the late 90's. As with food, Asian's do financial crisis's way better than us whiteys. How many skyscrapers were abandoned during the recent GFC? None. Think about it. Standing on a fifity level, almost completed skyscaper, some Thai guy says "fuck it man, lets just go eat some fried chicken. Yo! Kasit, Suthep, Sui Min...drop your helmets bitches! We're gettin' the fuck out of here! This building aint worth shit yo".

10th photo down, the side profile of the building. Just spent a solid 40 seconds scrolling up and down really fast on it. On some magic eye shit.

The Asians Finanical Crisis was about 12/13 years ago. You would have thought that somebody would have purchased the shell and finished it

Yep Christian, it was a while ago now. There are many buildings like this in Bangkok. Given the number of new towers currently under construction, it mustn't make financial sense to resurrect these shells. Makes for an interesting city!

I'm loving the plastic wrap that is still on the escalator- at least that's what I think it is.

Heya Nate,

I was wondering if you like to do some Exploring together some time. I've begun exploring pretty solidly for a good year now with a Mate and other random friends dragged along who are interested.

I'm developing a website which will store a map and photos of various locations though I'm not sure how much to put available to the public. Anyway we could share some notes. I have rumours of underground mail tunnels in Perth and Underground hospitals in Sir Charles Hospital which I'm keen to prove/disprove.

Love the site and photos by the way. Funny thing I was exploring a stopped building site in ascot region which was about 10 stories and looked very very cool. But you had to go find a bigger one now didn't you :)

When I get my site fully operational we can have an 'explore-off' and see which can get some better places or better photos.

drop me an email: waus@urbansurveing.com.au
feel free to pass on publishing this by the way

I've added the website link but its got nothing on it at the moment. Still unsure quite how to fill it but will happen shortly. We seem to be losing many great sites these days.

Ohh how did you go with the entertainment centre? That is high on my priorities at the moment.

Here is an example of a skyscraper that already had millions dumped into it and a foundation built just to be canceled due to the GFC. Whiteys sill want to make money.

I'll be heading to Thailand in May and am hoping to document a bunch of abandoned high rises. Would you be able to give any advice in terms of accessing these sites and what to aware of.

Cheers,
Amie

Hi Amie,
a) Watch out for packs of wild dogs throughout the abandoned buildings (serious). They are aggressive, very protective of their territory, and roam in large packs.
b) Crumbling concrete, holes that extend for forty or more levels down (in the dark), sharp objects, and other debris
c) Homeless people, often on drugs.
d) You will be committing a crime just being inside the private property, watch out for security guards, and police. Thai jails are not fun, so I have heard.

So in summary, enjoy your experience, and be very careful.

I can confirm that Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital does in deed have an array of underground tunnels and treatment areas.

I've been up that bad boy right to the top a couple of times and have loads of pics if you want i can put them up. It is the biggest waste of cash i have came across in my entire life. They use it for mega scale advertiseing now haha

Crazy stuff. There are the same things in Jakarta. I believe the humidity/moisture gets into the structure and the cost to restart/finish the building is too great. Costs heaps to finish, cost heaps to demolish so they just sit there.

Great blog Nate, you may have heard of this already but here is an article on the worlds tallest abandoned building in venezuelas. These pics reminded me of the story. http://m.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/08/02/a-video-tour-of-the-tower-of-david-venezuelas-infamous-skyscraper-turned-slum/

Hi there. Feel free to comment, but keep this in mind:
This is a happy place, lets keep it that way, together. In this day and age of spam and idiots, I need to check every comment before it gets published. If it's now 2013, odds are I'm on a tropical beach somewhere in South East Asia, or possibly checking out some abandoned Soviet-era architecture in Eastern Europe, and maybe your comment won't appear for some time. But leave one anyway! If you have a personal message for me, I won't publish the comment, so feel free to submit it here. Thanks for checking out 6000TIMES, and have a nice day.
